Cold Weather!

Here are some tips for keeping babies and toddlers safe in extra cold weather! Stay warm!!

Cold Weather Safety for Babies and Toddlers

  • Avoid outdoor play when temperatures or wind chills are below -15°F.

  • Babies should only be outside for a few minutes; toddlers should take breaks every 20–30 minutes.

  • Dress children in layers (babies usually need one more layer than adults).

  • Keep children dry and cover heads, hands, ears, and feet.

  • If clothes get wet from outside, take off immediately once you are indoors.

  • Watch for hypothermia: low energy, shivering, clumsiness, red or cold skin.

  • Watch for frostbite: white or pale gray skin on fingers, toes, ears, or nose.

  • If a baby or toddler’s body temperature drops below normal or symptoms are concerning, seek medical care immediately.

  • If you feel cold outside, your child likely is too — head indoors.
